Question:
What are RIs and how are they calculated?
Answer:
Reference Intake (RI’s) are a guide to the maximum number of calories, fat, saturates, sugars and salt an average adult should consume per day. The ‘traffic light’ labelling on the front of our packs shows what percentage of RI’s one serving or portion provides, helping you make a more informed choice about what you eat and drink.

Question:
What is the difference between saturated and non-saturated fat in Walkers crisps?
Answer:
Saturated fat and unsaturated fat differ in their chemical structure and their impact on health. Saturated fat is associated with blood cholesterol levels, so dietary advice recommends managing the intake of this in our diet. We use a blend of Sunseed and Rapeseed oil to cook our crisps, which has up to 75% less sat fat than traditional cooking oils.

Question:
How do Walkers fit into a balanced diet?
Answer:
The Government’s Eatwell Guide shows how snacks can be part of a balanced diet. It is generally accepted that 8-10% of your calories can come from a snack. For an average woman who needs around 2000 calories per day, this would be 160 – 200kcals. As an example, a 32.5g pack of Walkers Cheese & Onion flavour crisps contains 161kcals. Question:
How do you make your crisps?
Answer:
Our potatoes reach the factory daily by lorry. They’re then washed, peeled and sliced. After slicing, they’re cooked in a blend of Sunseed and Rapeseed oil, to give them their golden colour and distinct texture. It’s then straight over to our flavouring drum, but it doesn’t stop there! We then check the finished product for colour, crunch, flavour and even smell! All that’s left to do now is ship the nation’s favourite crisps to your local stores.

Question:
How long does the whole manufacturing process take, to go from potato to bag?
Answer:
Our closest farms are less than 30 minutes from our factories, so during harvest time the potatoes can be turned into crisps in packets within an hour, and on shelves in supermarkets within a day or two!

Question:
My bag appears to be really empty, are you putting less crisps inside?
Answer:
Our packets of crisps are filled by weight. You should always find that the packets weigh the grammage stated on the packet. However, there is a very good reason for the packets not being filled right to the top. Crisps are very fragile and can get crushed very easily. To try and prevent this from happening, we put air in the packs before they are sealed to act as a cushion for the product during transit. This does mean that the packets have to be a bit bigger than the contents.

Question:
Why are there burnt crisps in my bag?
Answer:
We only want the great crisps to make it into a bag of Walkers; which means we have checks in place to ensure that crisps with burnt bits don't make it in. However, from time to time some do slip through the net. If this is the case please let our consumer services team know through our website and they will be in touch.

Question:
How do you make sure your crisps stay fresh?
Answer:
Speed is the key! From delivery of potatoes to crisps going into packs, our whole process takes barely half an hour. This means your crisps are sealed at their freshest, but it doesn’t stop there. We also flush our packs with a burst of nitrogen. This keeps the freshness locked inside your pack, and prevents your snack from getting crushed.

Question:
Are your crisp bags recyclable?
Answer:
Yes. In 2018 we launched the UK’s first nationwide Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme. We’ve partnered with TerraCycle to make it easier to recycle our crisp packets and reduce the impact we have on the environment. This is another step in our journey towards making all our packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025. Find out more here -
